Joe Lee Wofford, Jr. passed on Tuesday evening February 26, 2008. He was born March 13, 1928 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Joe and Mary Wofford. The family moved to New Mexico in 1931 to a homestead west of Las Cruces, moving into town in 1934. Joe graduated from Las Cruces Union High School in 1945 and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from New Mexico State University. A professional engineer and land surveyor, he owned and operated Wofford Construction Company, taking over the business from his father. Commissioned in 1950, he served on active duty during the Korean War, continuing to serve in the United States Air Force until 1977 as a reserve officer, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He also served as a Boy Scout Troop leader. His interests included fishing, Aggie sports, and music. As a ten year old boy, Joe discovered a faith in Jesus Christ which became his life's driving force. From janitor to trustee, Joe served the First Baptist Church in such roles as Sunday School teacher and director, deacon, and interim music director on several occasions. He contributed his engineering skills, assisting in the construction of several buildings for new Baptist churches in the area. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Thelma Kelley Wofford of Las Cruces. Preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Darlene Henderson Wofford. Survived by their four sons: Larry, his wife, Marlene, and their children Ashley and Julie of Cary, North Carolina; Kenneth, his wife, Vera of Lilburn, Georgia; Robert of Las Cruces; and David and his wife, Lyn of Las Cruces.
