From Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home: Mary Jo Ludwig, nee Grothues, 81 of San Antonio, Texas entered into her eternal reward on March 7, 2023. Mary Jo was born on October 20, 1941, the eldest of five children. She attended St. Henry's grade school and Providence high school, graduating as Valedictorian in 1960. In November of that same year, Mary Jo married Allen C. Ludwig. Following Allen's 3-year Air Force tour of duty in Sacramento, California, they returned to San Antonio. She became active in St. Luke's Catholic Church and School for over 40 years, participating as a recurring room mother, member of the PTA, Altar Society, Bible Study and instructor for Confirmation classes. Upon moving to the Leon Springs area, Mary Jo found a wonderful community in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. There she became active as a greeter and member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She maintained life-long friendships, with many spanning well over 60 years. For decades, she enjoyed playing bunco with her former high school classmates. More recently, she enjoyed participating in her neighborhood club. As an avid quilter, she spent nearly every Tuesday for over 40 years with dear friends affectionately called "The Quilters." She also delighted in cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and gardening. She found the greatest pleasure in sharing those talents with others. Mary Jo was involved in many social organizations over the years including the San Antonio Aggie Women's Club, Hill Country Newcomers and Red Hat Society. She greatly enjoyed the camaraderie and service activities, and even got a real kick out of being asked to model in various luncheon fashion shows. She enjoyed some amazing travel adventures with family and friends that included trips across North America, South America, Africa and Europe. She truly relished her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. This woman epitomized wisdom, elegance and grace. She was greatly admired for the way in which she survived tragic losses and accepted a Parkinson's diagnosis with amazing humility and grit. She served as a great example to her family and friends for her deep devotion and conviction to her faith. She is our saint! She was preceded in death by her son Allen Clarence Ludwig, Jr. and her parents, Ben H. and Mary Elizabeth Grothues. She is survived by her husband of over 62 years, Allen and their children Amy Conner (Kevin), Theresa Cruz (Sergio), Beth Lopez (Rick) and granddaughters Megan Conner and Sarah Conner. She is also survived by her brother Ben H. Grothues, Jr. (Linda), Patricia Gossmann (Robert), Jerome Grothues (Tammy) and Jeffrey Grothues (Linda) along with numerous nieces and nephews. Services will take place on March 15, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church located at 8500 Cross Mountain Trail, San Antonio, Texas 78255.
