Evelyn grew up in Florida and met the love of her life J.W. Slater, whom she married in Tampa on December 13, 1952. After her marriage they moved to the Colorado City area where they settled down in 1955 making it their life-long residence. Evelyn had a passion for knowledge and a passion for books. This passion led her to her favorite job as a librarian for Western Texas College, as well as to volunteering at the First Baptist Church of Colorado City as their Librarian. Her love of words quickly made her known to others as a Queen of grammar. Evelyn always had a strong will to persevere through any situation, which helped her to be a cancer survivor of 55 years. She was a woman of faith and a woman who loved and cherished her family, so much so that she retired from her job to spend as much time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time Evelyn ran the Circle Six Ranch Baptist Encampment and enjoyed sewing.
