Mary Jo Stover, age 84, peacefully went to Heaven on the morning of January 21, 2023, at her home with her daughter Karla and grandson Jay at her bedside. With grieving hearts, the family mourns her loss but is assured she is home resting safely in the arms of our Heavenly Father. She was born February 8, 1938, in Sanger to John Douglas and Nellie Edna (Jones) Golliday. Sanger remained her home throughout her lifetime. Mary Jo attended school in Sanger, where she was active in various organizations and showed her school spirit as a Sanger High cheerleader. She had a real talent playing basketball and even took her team to the Regionals in 1955. She was a member of the 1956 graduating class. She also received numerous college credit hours from the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. She eloped and married her high school sweetheart, Robert L. Stover, on March 2, 1957, in Marietta, Oklahoma. They made their home in Sanger, where they raised their two daughters, Kimberly and Karla. Bob and Mary would have been married 66 years this March. Mary Jo was a lifelong and active member of the First Baptist Church. Her faith was very important to her. When she was given three months to live in 2000, she and her church family prayed steadfastly, and she was given 22 extra years to be with her family and friends. Her favorite Bible verse which got her through some very difficult years was Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." The Martha Sunday School Class was so very supportive and lifted her up over the years. Every member of the class meant so much to her, and she wanted to express this to them. She witnessed to each person who crossed her path during her cancer journey and told them about the miracle she had been given. Mary Jo went to work for the City of Sanger in 1973 as the City Secretary, remaining in this position for the next thirteen years. In 1986, she retired to take care of her first grandchild, McKinlea. She went on to help raise her only grandson, R-Jay, who Mary personally named Robert Joseph after her and Bob. Mary Jo loved her family and always put them first. Every decision she made was made with them in mind. Her ability to cook was another of her many talents which her family benefited. All would line up to help sample or fight to lick the bowl. She treasured her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. Lastly, Mary Jo loved piano music. She took lessons herself and made sure her children and grandchildren played. One of her favorite things to do was sit on the couch and listen to her sister, Kathy, play religious music, or her grandson, Jay, play Floyd Cramer and other genres of music. On special occasions, Kathy and Jay would perform duets and rock the house! Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents, John Douglas and Nellie Edna Golliday of Sanger; her brother, Billy John and wife Clara Nell Golliday of Hurst; her nephews Johnny Marshall Golliday and Donald Ray Golliday of Hurst.
