Francis's obituary read: Francis John Mazanec, Sr. ""Tiny,"" died at his home in North Fort Myers, Fla., Jan. 27, 2010. He was a retired Navy C.P.O. Mazanec was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Colby, Kansas, to parents Fred and Rose Mazanec. The family moved to Middleton, Idaho in his early teens. He had three brothers and one sister, Warren, Leonard, Donald and Olga. He is survived by his brother, Donald Mazanec, his wife of 64 years, Mary Ellen (Black); children Nancy V. Vandegrift, Francis John Mazanec, Jr.; grandchildren Valeri Mazanec, Eric Vandegrift, John M. Mazanec, Joseph A. Mazanec; and many cousins, including "devoted sister" Rita Ann Mazanec and Albin Mazanec. Mazanec worked many summer jobs as a ranch hand, farm hand lumberjack, or carpenter. He graduated from Middleton Public School Class in 1938. He joined the Navy in 1939, and trained as torpedo man. During WWII he served on several ships, the Biscayne, Fox, Waller and Henley. Near the end of the war, he was stationed in Miami rigging and testing PT boats. Mazanec met Mary Ellen in Miami in 1944 and they were married Jan. 10, 1945. After the war he and his new family were stationed in Key West, Fla.; Port Layoitte, Morocco; Norfolk, Va., and Azores, Portugal. He retired from the Navy in 1965 and relocated to North Fort Myers, Fla. His first job was with the Fort Myers Post Office. He said it was worse than being aboard ship. He later took a job with Bendix Corp at the NASA Tracking Station in South Fort Myers. NASA relocated the station to western North Carolina in 1972. Mazanec moved to Rosman where his wife joined him after her retirement in 1975. He retired from NASA in 1987. He was a communicant at Saint Francis Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Brevard and a proud lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He had many hobbies: cake decorating, traveling, bowling, sailing, woodworking. Being a grandfather was his favorite hobby. All the prayers from family and friends and his strength of character helped him through his last days. Francis John Mazanec, Sr. will be cremated and buried at sea.
