Bio

Richard was born on November 13, 1936 to Floyd and Agnes (Zeleny) Dowding in Seward, Nebraska. He graduated from Seward High School in 1955. On January 23, 1965, Richard was united in marriage to Deanna Ehrlich at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. Richard was a member of the Army National Guard for 6 years. He was employed as a truck driver, worked for Tenneco Automotive. He worked for the City of Seward for 20 years, retiring in 1995. Richard was also a salesman of Toyne Fire Apparatus for 20 years and worked at Chartwells Food Service Cafeteria and Seward Propane as a plumber. He was employed part-time at Seward Car Wash. In his free time, Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting and model railroading. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. Richard was a volunteer firefighter for the Seward Fire Department for 50+ years. He was elected to Company 2 on April 7, 1965. He then went to reserves on April 1, 1994. Richard received his 25-year pin in February 1991 and his 50-year pin in February 2016. He was the unofficial "fire police". He was a past president and vice president of the Seward Fire Department. He was also vice president & secretary/treasurer of the Model Train Club of Seward County and a member of Beatrice Railroad Enthusiasts. Richard passed away on October 31, 2017, in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 18 days. He is survived by his wife, Deanna Dowding, Seward, Nebraska; son, Richard Earl Dowding, Jr., Seward, Nebraska; grandchildren, Joshua Allen Dowding, Seward, Nebraska, Sarah (Michael) Wright, Hastings, Nebraska; brother, Donald (Ramona) Dowding, Yukon, Oklahoma; sisters, Velma Struthers, Lincoln, Nebraska, Betty Tomandl, Auburn, New York; brother-in-law, Roy (Linda) Ehrlich, Seward, Nebraska. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Agnes Dowding; brothers, Raymond Dowding and Robert Dowding; brothers-in-law, Russell Struthers and John Tomandl.
