Bio

The Benkelman Post and News-Chronicle 19 Dec 1941, Fri-Page 3 Joseph Henry Journey, son of William F. Journey and Elizabeth Hamm Journey, was born March 26, 1860, in Adams County, Indiana. His parents moved to Clarinda, Iowa, when he was a year old. Here he grew to young manhood. Acknowledging his faith in Jesus Christ and his redemption, Mr. Journey joined the Christian Church. December 8, 1889, he was married to Nellie Miller. From this union Wallace Journey, who was striken with blindness at an early age, still lives. However, the mother later gave birth to twins but mother and babies passed away and were buried together. On July 9, 1893, Mr. Journey married Phoebe Allen Reitz, who too had lost her mate in death. Her son, Elbert Reitz, is a grandson of the late Adam Reitz of Arapahoe, Nebraska. With their three-year-old boys, this couple began living on a rented farm in Frontier County. Next they moved to a farm in Gosper County and then to one in Furnas County. Once they went back to Iowa in a prairie schooner for a visit. Upon returning Mr. and Mrs. Journey purchased a home in western Nebraska. To this union were born five children, all of them growing up except Hazel who died when two years of age. These parents went through famine, drouth and floods. They were interested in raising an upright, honest family giving them education and a Christian home as a background with charity, the paramount virtue. Sometimes they fasted or went without needed garments in order to aid less fortunate ones. Once they gave an aged Grand Army of Republic veteran a home for five years until he received a pension. Fathe Flanagan's Home for Boys was the recipient of many gifts, such as quilts finished by both Mr. and Mrs. Journey. The Omaha Orphanage was also a beneficiary. The children and grand children remember their expressions of pleasure when each child gave up some cherished toy, garment or other belonging to help some needy family. Mr. Journey was in partnership with his son, Elmore Jay, for twenty-six years. Only a month ago he refused to break this relationship and go to a comfortable home and care of his daughter, who is a practical nurse in Omaha. The family understands and appreciates this friendly business partnership in which brother Jay has gladly given sacrificing service and loving companionship to Mother and Dad. Mr. Journey was a veterinarian and farmer and a true bother to his fellow man. In his last illness he was patient and grateful for the services of kinsman and neighbor when only a tear or weak handclasp sufficed for that splendid voice stilled by the stroke on December 2, 1941. He passed away at 1:20 o'clock, the afternoon of December 9, 1941. His wife preceded him in death on June 3, 1939. He leaves to mourn, two sons: Wallace Journey, of South Greenfield, Missouri, and Elmore Jay Journey of Max.; three daughters, Glady Martin of Tribune, Kansas, Josie Golding of South Greenfield, Missouri, Missouri and Jessa Brady of Omaha; a step-son Elbert E. Reitz of the Veteran's Hospital, Hot Springs, South Dakota; two sisters and a brother, ten grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. Jessa and Jay, Gladys and her husband were with Mr. Journey thru his last illness. The rest of the children were unable to be present because of illness in their families. He was a living and kindly father, a faithful and devoted husband, a doting grandfather, a friend to all mankind, and one of God's children. Brief funeral services were held at M.E. church by Rev. Martin, resident pastor, and burial was at Highland cemetery north of Max. Transcribed by Keri63 #47235359
