Jack A. Nieukirk Sr., 88, of Washington, Ill., died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Born on Oct. 29, 1919, in Peoria, Ill., to Henry and Jessie (Belote) Nieukirk, he married Mildred "Midge" Samms on March 24, 1940. She survives. Also surviving are five children, Jack (Gaye) Nieukirk Jr. of Chillicothe, Ill., Sandra Fisher, Steven (Alice) Nieukirk, Connie (Chuck) Bradle and Randy (Scotti) Nieukirk, all of Washington; and three sisters, Delores Hoffmann of Morton, Ill., Darlene Johnson of Roodhouse, Ill., and Geraldine Kiesow of Joliet, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Steven Ray Fisher; one son-in-law, Raymond L. Fisher; four brothers, Louis Nieukirk, Rolla Nieukirk, Ted Nieukirk and Robert Nieukirk; and one sister, June Nieukirk Ehle. Jack was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII, where he was awarded two Bronze Battle Stars. Jack retired as a truck driver from Consolidated Freightways. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 627. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9016 and the American Legion Post No. 100, both in Washington. Jack and Midge enjoyed traveling and dancing to big band music. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Military Rites Team.
