Atkinson Graphic Oct 28,1949 FORMER STUART RESIDENT DIES OF GUN BLAST Mrs John Copeland, Jr, 25, a former Stuart girl, died of a shotgun blast Friday, Oct 21 at her farm home about 10 miles northeast of Bassett. County attorney Arthur Weber, Bassett, said that an investigation of the death proved conclusive evidence that the gunblast was "self inflicted". The young farm wife and mother of a 6 year old son had written a note to her husband. Mr Weber said no inquest would be held. Mrs Copeland was the former Irene Bernt, daughter of the late Joe Bernt and Elizabeth Bernt of Stuart. Her husband is a son of John L Copeland, former state senator from the 28th district. Their son, John, age 6 is attending school in Stuart and living with his grandmother Elizabeth Bernt as there is no school in his home district. The Copeland's recently moved to the place northeast of Bassett and Mrs Copeland had been working hard fixing up the new home. Despondency resulting from over work and illness is thought to have been the cause of her act. Mr Copeland was in the farm yard repairing their car but said that he did not hear the shotgun. He discovered his wife's body in the house later in the afternoon. The funeral was held at Methodist Church, Bassett, Tuesday. Burial was in Bassett Cem. Mrs Copeland is survived by husband, son, mother, sister Vera and Leona, brother Leo of Stuart.
