Laura Nell Hausenfluke Teel 1925 - 2008 Laura Nell Hausenfluke Teel was born December 28, 1925 on her parents ranch near Georgetown, Texas. She was the eleventh of twelve children and had four brothers and seven sisters. She is survived by her husband, Almon of Merced, sons Jon of Merced, son Stephen and his wife Susan of Bodega Bay; youngest sister, Betty Jean Chapin, of San Angelo, Texas, a sister-in-law, Etta Merle Hausenfluke of Christoval, Texas, a brother-in-law, Newcomb Alexander, of Austin, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews. Laura graduated from Georgetown High School in 1943, at which time she went to Austin to work in Montgomery Ward's accounting department. She returned home to take care of her parents, her mother being a victim of paralysis. Soon afterward, she met Almon Teel, who in her absence had come to the university at Georgetown and was attending First Baptist Church where she was a member. The two enjoyed a courtship of about ten months, then were married on June 22, 1946. At that time, the closing of the Navy V-12 Program resulted in the groom being given orders to report for duty at San Diego to complete a six-year term of enlistment, and the bride, with a willing heart, was ready to go. Their first son, Stephen, was born in Texas the following summer. A year later the hitch in the Navy was completed, then, back to Texas. After another year in Georgetown to care for her parents, they moved to Ft. Worth, once more for education. The second son, Jon, was born shortly after their arrival there, but Laura, much to her credit in using her resourcefulness, completed two years toward a degree at Texas Christian University while in Ft. Worth. Laura was fierce in the battle for her own freedoms but was willing to follow Al wherever he determined he needed to go. In June of 1955, they, along with their two boys, journeyed to Sacramento, where she soon completed her degree program and received her teaching credential. They settled in the community of Orangevale, where she began her thirty-year teaching career and developed many close friendships. By 1968 the aerospace industry was shutting down, and Al was determined to go into teaching. Jobs had become scarce and it was necessary for him to move, so once again, Laura yielded to Al's wishes and they moved to the Merced area where they taught in the Dos Palos public schools. In 1977, Laura began another career as a lover of old homes. Her heart was deeply set on the old house which was for sale at the corner of W. 25th and K Streets. This time Al yielded to her wishes and they bought the old historic home without hesitation. She loved living there and did much to add to its beauty. She papered the walls with her favorite colors and designs. She grew irises and roses and visited historic places and flower gardens for 22 years, and in 1995 won the City Landscape Award for homes built before 1945. On the morning of October 2, 2008, Laura went to be with her Chief of Gardens. It would please her to be known as a lover of God, a lover of flowers and of all of God's creation. Honorary Pallbearers are her nephews, Jack Burson, Dick Burson, Frank Guttman, Larry Hausenfluke, Chuck Gibbs, Aron Teel, and Larry Hyink. Visitation will be held October 7, 2008, at Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced, from 4 to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from 1 to 2 p.m. at 408 W. 25th St. with a Memorial Service to follow. For those wishing to donate to charity in her name, Habitat for Humanity was one of her favorites. Published by Merced Sun Star on Oct. 7, 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Laura was the daughter of Maggie E. and Job F. Hausenfluck. In 1930 and 1940, the family was living in Williamson County, TX. As can be seen, by her siblings' memorials, their surname is found with spelling variations. Her Texas marriage record has it spelled Hausenfluke, but one of their children's Texas birth record and her parents' obituaries have it spelled as Hausenfluck. Laura and Al were laid to rest at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on October 27, 2022.
