Lifelong Abilene resident Erma Lee Richardson Owens, 96, passed away Thursday, October 20, in Oklahoma City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 27, 2022, at 12 Noon, in North's Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 Wednesday at North's Chapel. Erma Lee Richardson Owens was born January 28, 1926, in Hamby, Texas to Howard Barbee Richardson and Jewell Erma Younse Richardson. Erma Lee attended schools in Hamby and Abilene, and graduated from Abilene High School in 1944. She married Burl Glen Owens June 14, 1945, in Hamby, Texas. On June 14, 2021, the couple celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary with family and many friends present. Erma Lee and Burl were a great team. Together they worked and raised their two sons and contributed to the care and well being of many others. They were helpful, generous, and always willing to open their home to family, friends and acquaintances. During her working years Erma Lee was employed as bookkeeper for several local businesses, retiring from Merchants Freight Motor Lines in 1994. She was an efficient, conscientious and dependable employee and took great pride in her work. Additionally, Erma Lee was instrumental in helping research, compile and print a Younse family book chronicling the Younse family heritage and descendants. She was also a great help and supporter of the Younse family reunion held annually in Abilene for the past 53 years. Erma Lee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Burl (May 23, 2022), an infant son Michael Burl Owens, daughter-in-law Sheryle Owens, and a sister, Alta Marie Hubbard. Erma Lee is survived by one sister, Norma Stephens of Abernathy, two sons, Gary Owens of Plano and David Owens and wife Susie of Oklahoma City, four grandchildren: Brad Owens (Dorci), Heather Owens, Brian Owens (Danai), Lacey Roche (Joey,) 10 Great Grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
