Bio

Herbie Heavin, age 87, of 6920 SE Nighthawk Lane, Riverton, Kan., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at 10:16 p.m. at the Higher Call Nursing Center in Quapaw, Okla., after a long illness. Herbie was born March 11, 1920, in Eldon, Mo., to the union of Charles T. and Mary Ann Gaddy Heavin. They have since preceded him in death. Herbie was a lifelong area resident. He had previously worked for the Burlington Railroad then later for the American National Insurance Company. He owned and operated Ideal Cleaners, of Baxter Springs, Kan., from 1957 until his retirement in 1971. He was baptized at the age of 12 and has been a member of the First Christian Church, of Baxter Springs, for over 75 years. During that time he has served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, board member, song leader and for over 50 years, as the church's "Gum Man." Herbie was a part of the U.S. Army Engineers group serving in New Guinea and Australia from April 1941 to January 1944. He also was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W., the D.A.V. and the Lions Club, all of Baxter Springs. He was a Gideon and also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program in Baxter Springs. Herbie Heavin and Frances Pauline Doty were united in marriage June 4, 1944, at the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs. She survives. Other loved ones who survive include his three daughters and their husbands, Linda and Russell Price, of Riverton, Mary and Robert Hilton, of Joplin, Mo., and Janet and Jeff Carr, of Riverton; and two brothers, Charles "Frog" Heavin and wife, Shirley, of Topeka, Kan., and Rev. Rex Heavin and wife, Irene, of Overland Park, Kan. There are nine grandchildren, Bradley Price and wife, Amy, Michael Price, Elisha McCoy, Shayna Hilton, Jacob Chesnutt, Ashley Chesnutt, Christine Brown and husband, Josh, Brittany Hilton and Brianna Hilton. His four great-grandchildren are Lexi, Hadley, Shaylor and Brailey. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Hadley and Ernest Heavin; and one sister, Fern Garrett. Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs. Pastor Dr. Steve Minor, Rev. Geoff Buffalo and Rev. Jeff Adams will officiate. Bro. Claude Craig will serve as eulogist. Interment will be at the Baxter Cemetery with his nephews serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs. Herbie dedicated his life to spreading the good news.
