Mr. Ronald Lee Payne, Sr., 72, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 8:40 pm Monday, October 10, 2022, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa. Ronald was born March 3, 1950, in Galesburg the son of Arnold J. and Myra E. (Tarr) Payne. He married Cheryl Lynch, but they later divorced. Ronald is survived by his children, Melissa Payne of Galesburg, Nick (Sarah) Payne of Abingdon, Illinois, Trisha Payne of Monmouth, Illinois and Ronald (Kaitlyn) Payne II of Galesburg; one brother, Donnie Payne; one sister, Jerry Henry of Monmouth and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Chuck Payne and two sisters, Mary Anna and Veda Payne. Ronald joined the US Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He worked many odd jobs, including cooking and cleaning. Ronald was best known as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. His resemblance to Santa Claus also led him to volunteer as Santa at nursing homes and children's events. Ronald enjoyed the great outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Ronald's wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of his Life will be held in the spring with a burial in Monmouth City Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
