Jakub Gerla was born in Kladeruby, Moravia now a part of the Czech Republic, but after he married Magdalena Dolacsek, he lived about four miles away in her home town of Litschel, Moravia now called Hranicke Loucky, Czech Republic. Information about Jakub's early life is limited, but we know three of his children, Charles, Aloisia, and Adolph were born in Hranicke Loucky. Two children, Maria and Stephan, were born in Bosaca, Slovakia, but the reason for the family living in Bosaca is unknown. In 1874, when Jakub was 30 years old, he emigrated with his family to America. They landed in New York, NY and cleared customs at Ellis Island. The family's first Texas residence was Hostyn where the youngest daughter, Wilhilmina, was born. It appears that they soon moved to the Dubina area because most of their information is from that location. But, other than tax and other non-personal data, there is little information about the lives of the Gerla's in Dubina. There is also no information about Jakub's death at age 48 in 1892. Very likely he died of sickness or an injury since his wife lived an additional 26 years. Also, there is little or no information about Jakub Gerla's family in the present day Czech Republic.
