Buried: 01/28/08. Dallas Morning News Feb. 2, 2008 MATNEY, MILDRED EDNA (HOWELL) June 9, 1916-January 25, 2008 Mildred Matney passed away on January 25 at the age of 91. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a friend who sustained friendships for a lifetime, and a teacher who touched the lives of thousands over a career of 42 years. Mildred grew up in the small farming community of Vashti. Her loving parents, Charles Edward and Annie Maud McKinney, taught her the value of hard work, sacrifice and devotion to others. A strong student, she graduated from high school and began teaching at Bellevue in 1934, when she was 18. She taught students older than she was and sent most of her salary home to her parents. Some years later she graduated from North Texas State Teachers College. When she resumed teaching in Shannon, she met and married a co-teacher, George Raymond Howell. Over the years she taught students at all grade levels, in school systems as diverse as Duncanville, Wichita Falls and Paradise. After George's death in 1965, she married Charles Matney of McKinney, where she lived until his death in 1980. She then returned to Duncanville and was active in the First Christian Church for many years. Mildred loved teaching, reading and travel to Europe, Canada and the county courthouses of Texas. Most of all, she loved her family. One grandchild, Joyce Howell, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Joe Howell and his wife Dorothy, and Dwayne Howell and his wife Sula; her grandchildren Alicia Howell, David Howell and his wife Adrienne, and Katherine Harte and her husband James; and her great-grandson Seamus Harte. Funeral services were held at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Dallas on January 28. The family requests that gifts in her memory go to the First Christian Church of Duncanville.
