Margaret Gray Trigg was born 18 August 1877 in Dallas County, Texas, the daughter of Francis James Trigg (1848–1919) and Columbia Lavonia Gray (1847–1935). She married Hugh Edward Chesnutt (1868-1923) on 12 December 1899 in Amarillo, Texas. They were the parents of Grace Chesnutt (1900-1914) and Hugh Edward Chesnutt Jr. 1911-2001.
