Mattie Mae Guthrie September 27, 1912 - January 19, 2008 Mattie Mae Guthrie, 95, of Georgetown, Texas passed away on January 19, 2008 in Bartlett, Texas. Mattie was born September 27, 1912 in Georgetown to John S. and Nancy Patterson Gibbs. Mattie spent her life as a homemaker. She set the bar for what a mother should be. She made clothes for all of the girls. This was in the era where one did not go to the store for "ready boughts" that did not have love and care made into them. In addition to her talent of making clothes, she handmade quilts for all of the girls that are still used to this day. She taught cleanliness, manners and everything that counted. Mattie was sincere in her belief in God. She shared her faith and there was no question about her values. Her sense of humor was such that she told the girls, that when she died, she wanted "I told you I was sick" on her headstone. Mattie is survived by her daughters; Cleota Whitt of Salado, Tx, Bonnie Russell of Austin and Audrey Jo Whittenberg of Salado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Guthrie, daughter Elna Ray Cecil and a son, Virgil Arnold Guthrie. Nothing is so missed as a mother's kiss and a mother's touch. Just as she tended a garden to place food on the table, she lovingly tended a family garden that continues to grow, watered by her spirit. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday January 22, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ray Smith of Calvary Baptist Church in Temple conducting the service. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown.
