Her early childhood was spent on her parent's dairy farm located near the Galleria area in Houston. She attended St. Agnes Academy in Houston, Texas, graduating in June 1941. After graduating high school, she moved to San Antonio, Texas and worked at Duncan Field (Kelly Air Force Base). One of her jobs included working on the Norden Bombsight during World War II.  Two of her favorite places in San Antonio were Casa Rio on the riverwalk and Breckinridge Park. She later returned to Houston, living on Baylan Street in the Heights, and began working in downtown Houston for Humble Oil as a payroll clerk. After settling in Hockley, Texas while her children were still in school, she worked for many years as the secretary to the Principal of Waller Junior High School.  She was actively involved in school functions, participating in the PTA and Band Club, helping with school field trips, and working the concession stand at football games.  She was also actively involved with St. Anne Catholic Church, being one of the charter members of the Catholic Daughters. After retirement, she was able to spend her time fulfilling a passion she had for traveling.  She traveled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, where she was zip lining at the age of 85, and her favorite place, Las Vegas, NV. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Ed, George, Steve, and Alphonse (Butch) Maywald, as well as, her former husband, Lawrence F. Hegar.  She is survived by her children, Karen A. Cook and husband Robert Hanson, Mary Lynn Hegar and partner David Cole, and Lawrence F.
