Richard was born in Osceola, Iowa, the only child of Harlen "Bunk" Burbank Hatfield and Fredine Virginia Hatfield. Richard graduated High School in Osceola in 1958 and remained in touch with several of his classmates for over 60 years. After graduating high school, Richard moved to Chicago, Illinois beginning his career with Continental Airlines. At this time, he also joined the United States Navy Reserve and began his flight training. While in the reserves, Richard served his country in the Vietnam War as a pilot. He started with TWA in 1965, working his way up to Captain and eventually becoming a flight instructor. His career in the commercial airline industry ended tragically after a hunting accident in which his eyesight was impaired. Richard was a very independent man who demonstrated perseverance and grit throughout his life, never giving up even when facing tough challenges. Richard had an admiration for the outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed coyote hunting in Iowa with family members, turkey hunting in the Ozarks, and weekend canoe trips with his sons, Jason and Garrett. He always looked forward to spending time and working on his farm in Osceola. You would find him tinkering on tractors with his dog, Ace, and son, Garrett by his side. Richard was passionate about family and friends and enjoyed spending time with loved ones. He was especially close to his cousin, Joyce whom he always said was like a sister to him. He was devoted to his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their school and sports events. He left them with an abundance of worldly advice to live by. He was very charitable to organizations that provided for children in need. He couldn't stand the thought of a child going without. Richard also spent over a decade making contributions and serving his community at the Shoal Creek Living History Museum.
