Ruth Zelda (Hammer) Snider or Zelda Ruth…even she didn't know for sure, 104 years young of Mount Calm joined our Lord Saturday, August 27, 2022 while in the care of a Bellmead nursing facility. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 3 at First Baptist Church of Mount Calm with Rev. John Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 2 at the funeral home. Ruth, to all that knew her, was born August 1, 1918 in the Bowman/New Hope area, one of eight children to Elmer and Ollie (Vosburg) Hammer. She met Leonard Snider at the end of a cotton row of adjoining properties and later married July 6, 1940 in Mount Calm. She attended school in Bowman and later New Hope where she almost completed the 10th grade. Ruth was a strong independent soul who loved the Lord and her family and was devoutly committed to both. A strong worker that shamed her brothers on many occasions, she worked the fields as a youngster and continued through marriage and motherhood. She started work at the Hubbard High cafeteria when her boys attended there…bus service didn't go all the way to the farm back then and if she drove them, she was assured they were present. She finished her outside-the-home career at Kreditors Manufacturing where she dedicated twenty plus years. Ruth loved and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mount Calm for as long as can be remembered, driving herself to services well into her 99th year and monopolizing Mother's Days' "Oldest Mother" competition for too many years. She had been a member of the choir, having memorized almost every verse of every song in the Baptist Hymnal, volunteered for VBS, and joyfully served when and where needed for as long as she was able. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Leonard Snider, Sr. in 2004; by her parents; four brothers Alfred "Sledge" Hammer, Dan Hammer, Felix Newton (Ted) Hammer, and Lotus Hammer; sisters, Pauline Hammer Wilson and Lurena "Skeeter" Hammer Fulton; grandson, Dale Snider; daughter-in-law, Pat Snider, and great-great grandson, Oliver Case Hostetter. Survivors include two sons, Leonard Snider Jr., "Duke" to most, "Jr" to some, and wife, Vicki of Powell, Wyoming and Charles "Charlie" Snider and wife, Carolyn of Mount Calm; her baby brother, Glyn Hammer of Temple; two grandchildren, Pamela Ruth Snider Trull and husband, Mark of Kennedy, Alabama and Jon Snider and wife, Martha of Bryan/Mount Calm; five great-granddaughters, Sadie Bartling and husband, Lance of Cook's Point, Amanda Lee and husband, Jordan of Laramie, Wyoming, Jessica Hostetter and husband, Drew of Gillette, Wyoming, Megan Rudasill and husband, Tyler of Bryan, and Josie Vidal and husband, Adrian of Johnson City; seven, and trying for more, great-great grandchildren, Rylee and Zoey Rudasill of Bryan, Eli, Lyle, and Sunny Layne of Cook's Point, and Jaclyn and Alexis Lee of Laramie, Wyoming; plus 104 years' worth of nieces and nephews scattered around the country. Pallbearers will be nephews: Eugene Fulton, Don Fulton, Harry Dean Fulton, and Bobby Hammer; great nephews, Lynn Hammer and David Hammer, who always made sure Ruth could keep the old red Ford burning up the roads. A very special and heartfelt thanks from our family to Ernestina Benitez and Kyla Alonso for the love and care shown to "Mom & Granny" that allowed her to stay at home over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, because you know Ruth wouldn't want anyone to waste money or make a fuss, please send any memorials to First Baptist Church of Mount Calm, Ruth's church home and "family" that she loved so much.
