From The Crete News, Crete, Nebraska, Oct. 30, 1941, pg. 2 Leopold Marek, a prominent Crete business man between the years of 1902-1918 passed away on Tuesday Oct. 21, at 7:22 a.m. in Townsend Hospital, Gowanda, N. Y. at the age of 79 years, 11 months, 6 days. Mr. Marek had been actively interested in Z. C. B. J. Sokol and Herman Sons Lodges during his years at Crete. Eleven of his children had at one time or another during their school years attended the Crete public schools. He was born in Zarovnn, Bohemia which country was more recently one of the states of the Republic of Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States in his 20th year arriving in New York Citty in 1881. After only a short stay in New York City, he moved westward, locating in St. Paul, Nebraska. A little later he procurred employment in Schuyler, Nebraska but remained there for only a year or so after which he returned to St. Paul. Here he met and in 1885 married Anna Holecek with whom he lived for more than 56 years. 12 children were born to them, three of whom preceded him in death. In their earlier married life they farmed near St. Paul. However as the children grew to the age where it was necessary to attend school. Mr. Marek moved to Ord Nebraska wher ehe engaged in business until 1902 at which time the family moved to Crete. Following the first World War, he purchased a large dairy farm near Cattaraugus, N. Y. to which he moved in 1919. He operated this farm with his sons until the time of his death. More recently only his son, Leon, was actively associated with him in this enterprise. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna Holecek Marek, six sons, James of Los Angeles, Calif, Stanley, of R. F. D. No. 3 Cattaraugus, N. Y., Edward F. of Jamestown, N. Y., Charles V. of Rushford, N. Y., L. Paul of Crete, Nebr., and Leon J. of Cattaraugus, N. Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Jay Lefler of Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. A. A. Wilcox of Jamestown, N. Y., and Mrs. John Freeouf of Dorchester, Nebr. ALso two sisters, Mrs. Mary Slezak, New Alexandria, Pa and Mrs. Lenora Kocka, Cleveland, Ohio. There are 18 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 23 from St. Mary's Catholic Church and interment was in Liberty Park Cemetery, Cattaraugus, N. Y.
