Husband of Bertha Fitzgerald
From the Frankston Citizen March 28, 1985 Funeral services for Robert A. (Gruder) Fitzgerald, 82 of Athens were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Russ Frase, the Rev. Tom George and Dr. Ralph Phelps officiaiting. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery in Henderson County, under the direction of Foster and Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Serving as pallbearers were Leon Johnson, Nolan Wilson, Dee Warren, Ernest Williams, Lonnie Perry and Floyd Howland. Honoray pallbearers were Clarence Tillison, Reagan Warren, Buck Williams and Ray Paulk. Mr. Fitzgerald died Friday of last week in an Athens hospital, following a long illness. Born December 29, 1902, in the Blackfoot Community, he lived his entire lifetime in Anderson and Henderson Counties. For several years he owned and operated a barber shop in Athens. For many years he served as song leader of the Virginia Hills Baptist Church, and was a well-known fiddle player. He and Mrs. Fitzgerald, the former Bertha Bristow, had been married for forty-six years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Fitzgerald of Athens; two sons, Butch Fitzgerald and Garry Fitzgerals, both of Athens; two daughters, Mrs. Lydell Martin of Beaumont and Mrs. Sue Wylie of LaRue; three sisters, Mrs. Genie Hill of Malakoff, Mrs. Maudie Dean of Palestine and Mrs. Eunice Garner of Houston; six grandsons, four grand-daughters and one great-grandson.
