She was born in Shelby County, Texas and lived in the Houston area most of her adult life. She was a homemaker and retired from retail sales with Sears Roebuck and Company. Velma was loved by all who knew her. She was a Christian lady who had a sweet spirit and a genteel manner. Her children knew her as "Mother", her grandchildren and great grandchildren knew her as "Granny". When you married into her family, you became her child or grandchild, not an in-law. She had a heart full of love and we are thankful to have shared her love all these years. Many of her family members were with her to celebrate her 88th birthday just last month. Granny was a great cook and famous for her chocolate pies. Fortunately, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter know how to make her pie recipe to carry on the legacy. Velma loved flowers and gardening. Many have shared in the bounty of fresh vegetables tended by her loving hands. Velma loved to read and continued to do so until the end, even though she suffered from macular degeneration. Velma had a zest for life that included a love for ballroom dancing that she continued until she was in her early 80s. Christmas was her favorite holiday because family gathered each year to visit and enjoy one another and celebrate our Savior's birth. Despite many hardships in life, Velma was resilient. She loved the Lord, had put her trust in Him and was ready to meet him face to face. While we are secure in the knowledge that she is with our Lord and are glad she will no longer suffer from declining health, we will miss her so much. Left to cherish her memory are Sons: Kenneth Oates & wife, Judy, of Magnolia; Donald Oates & wife, Freya, of Deer Park; Burt Johnson & wife, Linda, of Spring; Jeff Johnson & Fiancé, Andrea, of Magnolia; Daughter: Suzanne Gates & husband, Ed, of Conroe; 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren plus many other relatives and friends.
