Bio

R.E. "Shorty" Wortham, 88, of Spurger, Texas passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021 at his residence. Visitation will be held Monday, November 1, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville, Texas. Burial will follow at Fred Community Cemetery in Fred, Texas. Dr. Fred Alford will be officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Wes Wortham, Ryan Wortham, Matt Bryan, Jacob Wortham, Ty Cauthen and Will Cauthen. R.E. was born December 25, 1932 to Roy Egbert and Rosa Elizabeth Langston Wortham in Palestine, Texas. Played on the first Klein High School football team as a freshman in 1947-48. Graduated in 1950-51. Made the All-District team. He turned down a football scholarship to the University of Houston, in order to accept an athletic scholarship to Rice Institute, now Rice University. Lettered as a freshman on both football and baseball teams. Started his sophomore year as the first-string defensive end on the varsity, but was red shirted after an injury to his knee. He played on the Southwest Conference Championship team in 1953. They defeated Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on January 1, 1954. R.E. lettered the following two years as a guard. After graduation he coached the Klein freshman football team in 1957. Served as the assistant football coach in 1958. He also served as the head football coach in 1959. They won the first football championship for Klein in 1960. He remained the head coach at Klein High School through 1966-67 school year. That year they won the District Championship and lost to Bastrop in Bi-District. They only had 20 points scored against them in district and non-district play. He went on as Athletic Director and head coach at Warren High School for eight years. In 1975, he returned to the Klein school district for 14 years before retiring in 1989. R.E. was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Rosa Wortham; sister, Dorothy Allee; son-in-law, Alfred Bryan, Jr., and great grandson, Elijah Bittick. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a faithful member of Blanchard Baptist Church where he enjoyed playing his guitar and singing with his wife. R.E. is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Annette Wortham of Spurger, Texas; daughters, Valerie Wortham Bryan of Chester, Texas and Peggy Wortham Cauthen and husband, Ken of Warren, Texas; son, Wesley Wortham and wife Debra of Hemphill, Texas; ten grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; also survived by a host of other loving family members and friends.
