Bio

Lee Roy Nelson, 77, of Schulenburg, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 at Hallettsville Nursing & Rehab after an illness of several years. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Fr. Isaac Maunger officiating and entombment in the church mausoleum. Pallbearers were American Legion members along with Michael Okruhlik, Trevor McGillem and Jim Long. Named as honorary pallbearers were Robert Sommer and Chad Riche. Rosary was said at 10:30 a.m. at the church, preceding the funeral and led by Ken Berger. Born on Aug. 18, 1944 at Clarendon, he was the son of Grady and Betty Nelson. He attended Schulenburg High School, and served his country in the U.S. Air Force. On June 10, 1967, he married Nelda Sommer at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and they were married 54 years. A 60-year resident of the Schulenburg area, he also lived in San Antonio. He worked at Dairy Farmers of America. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of the yard and his biggest love was fishing and camping. Survivors include his wife, Nelda Nelson; a daughter, Darlene Nelson Smith and husband Clyde of Schulenburg; a son, Byron Nelson and wife Dawn of Weimar; a sister, Bobbie Okruhlik of Schulenburg; a brother, Arthur Nelson of Schulenburg; and two grandchildren, Piper and Archer Nelson. His parents, Grady and Betty Nelson, preceded him in death.
