Bio

Claude Clifton Meade, 85, was called home on Monday, November 18, 2007, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born December 18, 1921, in Scott County, Virginia. He was the son of Ambrose Meade and Martha Holbrook Meade. Mr. Meade served in the Army during World War II arriving in Normandy nine days after the D-Day invasion. He was severely wounded on July 13, 1944, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He recuperated at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Hospital in Staunton, where he met his future wife, Martha Jane Wiseman. They married on October 1945. They had been married 59 years when she died in 2004. Surviving him are his four daughters and their husbands, Richard and Brenda Suddreth, Erskine and Carol Rhodes, Tim and Betty Chambers, and David and Tammy Cockrell. He had nine beloved grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Avondale Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, with burial at Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC.
