Bio

Reverend Thomas L. Zeleny, age 77, of Wilton, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2021, at the Lutheran Home in Muscatine. Visitation will be 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 8, at Bentley Funeral Home in Wilton. Memorials may be made to the Wilton United Methodist Church or Compassus Hospice in his memory. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 9, at Wilton United Methodist Church in Wilton. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m., following the services in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Thomas L. Zeleny was born August 7, 1943, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of Louis and Helen (Jones) Zeleny. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School with the Class of 1961. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966, including two years in Vietnam. Following his discharge from service, he attended and graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette and then attended and graduated from St. Paul's Theology School in St. Paul, MInnesota in 1983. He married Connie Whittenbaugh on August 10, 1968, in Fayette, Iowa. He started his employment in sales, including department stores, automobiles and life insurance. He was a devout Christian and decided to enter into the ministry, where he served God as a United Methodist Pastor for 34 years, until retiring in 2014. He served at many locations, including Smith Chapel and Blackwater in Missouri, Lamoni, Decatur, Davis City, Mt. Union, Morning Sun, Wesley Chapel, LaPorte City, Wilton, High Prairie and Kingston, all in Iowa. He was a member of the American Legion in Wilton and the Lions Club, International. He was also a volunteer fireman and first responder for over twenty years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and volunteering. Above all, he loved the time he spent with his family. Surviving are his wife, Connie; one daughter, Amy (Tony) Salemi of McHenry, IL; one son, Chad (Krystal) Zeleny of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren, Joe and Chris Salemi, Derek Zeleny, Samantha (Ross Heitmeier) Zeleny and Reece Coffman; and two sisters, Carolyn Kirn of Anaheim, CA, and Rosemary Rundell of Manhattan, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Doris Zeleny and one brother-in-law, Dale Kirn. Bentley Funeral Homes
