"James T. Kuykendall, 52, animal control officer for the Salinas police department, passed away at his home, 320 West Curtis street, this morning following a brief illness. City firemen were summoned to the family home with a resuscitator at 9:14 o'clock and stood by until a doctor arrived. Through his seniority as a patrolman with the police department, Officer Kuykendall held Badge No. 1. He was employed by the department from 1943 and was transferred from the parking meter patrol last year to animal control. At the time of the assignment, Police Chief Raymond J. McIntyre, said that the animal control detail was one of the most important functions of his department. Officer Kuykendall, a resident of Salinas for 25 years, was born in Campbell, Ark. He was a former school teacher in that southern state. Fraternally, he was chancellor commander of Salinas lodge No. 183, Knights of Pythias. Officer Kuykendall is survived by his widow, Viola, of the family home; a daughter, Miss Dolores K. Kuykendall of Princeton, Mo.; four brothers, Walter C. of Watsonville, Homer F. of Marshall, Ark., Willis H. of Santa Rosa, Fla., and William H. of Kansas; four sisters, Mrs. Leona Denton of San Francisco, Mrs. Dave Fox and Mrs. Maude Weck, both of Salinas, and Mrs. Roma McElroy of Springdale, Ark."
