Bio

Son of Charles & Meta (Heins) Behnken. He attended rural schools in York County and then went to York High School. On October 3, 1941 Wayne joined the United States Coast Guard and was active in World War II and spent 2 years in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands aboard supply ships. He received the rank of MM2C and was discharged on September 13, 1945. On October 10, 1945 he married Dorothy Matousek at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Gresham, NE. Wayne worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads in York and Neligh for 36 years and retired in 1983 as Area Maintenance Supervisor. After retiring they moved to Columbus. He was active in the American Legion, the VFW, and Peace Lutheran Church.
