Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent Wednesday, 16 June 1971 Mrs. Sophie P. Haines, 2408 N. Grand Island Ave., died Tuesday morning at a local nursing home at the age of 85. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel of the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Melvin Koelling, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. She was born June 8, 1886, at Shelby, the daughter of Frederick and Louise Brown (Braun?) Wendt. She attended Shelby schools and grew to womanhood there. She was married to Christopher B. Haines in September, 1921, at St. Paul. They made their home in Grand Island. Mr. Haines died in 1964 and since that time she has made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Beliel. Mrs. Haines has been in poor health the last five months. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Beliel of Grand Island and Mrs. Bessie Kent of Troutdale, Ore.; one sister, Mrs. Frank Bahr of Silver Springs, Md., seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
