Is it Frances or Francis Rychlik? In the 1900 & 1910 US Federal Census it's shown as "Fannie", in the 1920 & 1940 US Federal Census it's shown as "Francis", in the 1930 & 1950 US Federal Census it is shown as "Frances". The US Social Security Index shows "Frances" as does her Texas Death Record in which her son Edd Tolboka was the Informant. Yet on her husbands WWII draft card it's listed as "Francis". To make matters more confusing on her 1896 Marriage License it reads "Fannie RICHLIK". And finally, on her tombstone it reads "Frances". I tend to believe that Frances is the correct spelling since her son provided the information on her death certificate AND the family obviously had it inscripted on the tombstone. "Fannie" was obviously her nickname. As to why she would have Fannie RICHLIK listed on her marriage license...I know that the story from the family is that the pronunciation of Rychlik (RIK-LICK) sounded too German so they pronounced RYCHLIK as RICH-LICK or RICK-LEE to "soften" the name and make it sound less German. I also think that many immigrants names were misspelled simply because of the language barrier and most "official" documents were transcribed by English speaking/writing American record takers who had trouble understanding the dialect of the interviewee.
