Arletta Veronica Rourke West, was born Nov. 8, 1924 in Callaway, Custer County, Neb., and died Sept. 30, 2007 in Portland, Ore. Arletta was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Arletta was the youngest of the six children born to Edmund Leo and Mary Estella (Craig) Rourke. The family moved from Nebraska to Idaho in 1939. She graduated from Meridian, Idaho high school in 1942, and moved to California. She came to Portland in 1947, working as a secretary and administrative assistant for Gunderson Bros. Corp. which became FMC Corp. She retired in 1982. She was married to Frederick H. (Freddie) West from 1958 until his death in 1990. Arletta loved her animals especially her dogs and she regularly fed neighborhood cats in need of a good meal. When her dog passed away a few years ago, she decided that she was not able to care for a new dog and surrounded herself with stuffed puppies, which she loved. Most of all she loved and was devoted to Jesus, His Mother and the Church as evidenced by her life as well as the many mementos in her home. She is survived by her sister, Helen Gibson of Meridian, Idaho, 22 nieces and nephews, many dear neighbors and special friends including Nick and Fran Bachman, Vicki and David Flanery, Lorraine and PJ Chittick, Ken and Marilyn Hochhalter, Barry and Pauline Mogus and Doris Gossett. She was preceded in death by her husband Freddie, her parents, brothers Harold and Joe Rourke, sisters Mary Litty and Catherine Waldron, and one niece. A Vigil Service was held Tuesday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. at Mt. Scott Funeral Home, 4205 SE 59th St., Portland, Ore., with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 5221 SE Knight St. Portland, Ore. Internment is in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
