Bio

The Rev. Jrome J. Stryk, 79 of Plum, Fayette County, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999. He was born July 20, 1919 in Praha, to the late Frank and Albina Barta Stryk. He attended parochial school in Praha through eighth grade and attended St. John's Seminary in San Antonio. He was ordained for the priesthood on Dec. 21, 1944 at San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio. He served as associate pastor at St. Mary Magdalen's Parish in San Antonio, then transferred to St. Mary's Parish in Victoria in 1947. He was associate pastor of St. Cornelius Church in Karnes City and Queen of Peace Parish in Kenedy. He served at St. Joseph's Church in Yoakum and was appointed state chaplain of the Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas and served for three years . He also served at St. Cecilia's Church in San Antonio, St. Phillip's Church in El Campo, St. Andrew's Church in Hillje, St. Procopius in Louise, St. Peter's Parish in Blessing and St. Robert's in Markham. In 1984 he began serving at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Plum and retired in 1998. He was a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus and was a member of the KJT Praha Lodge No. 1. Survivors: brothers, Frank Stryk and Edwin Stryk, both of Victoria and Louis Stryk of Flatonia; and sisters, Sister M. Bernard Stryk and Irene Orsak, both of Victoria and Helen Muras of Flatonia. Preceded in death by: sister, Lillie Kalina; brother, Bernard Stryk; and an infant brother, Joseph. Family visitation will begin afternoon today at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plum. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the church, followed by Mass. The body will be taken to St. Mary's Church in Praha at 8 am Friday for services at 11 am with Bishop David Felhauer officiating and assisted by priests of the Diocese of Victoria. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Praha. Memorials to the church or to the Diocese of Victoria Vocations Fund.
