The Peoples Banner (David City, Nebr.), August 6, 1937, p. 5, col. 6 DEATH OF MARTIN VANEK The death of Martin Vanek came as a shock to his friends and relatives in this city on Tuesday afternoon at about 6 o’clock. Mr. Vanek suffered a heat stroke about two weeks ago but was bedridden only since Friday of last week. Mr. Vanek had attained the age of 68 years, 11 months and 9 days at the time of his passing, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Adkisson in this city. Mr. Vanek was born in Prague, Bohemia, where he was reared to young manhood and where he was united in marriage to Miss Kathryn Matejka, 46 years ago. They came to the United States July 5th, 1893, and since that time he has been a resident of David City, making 43 years a resident of this city. Mrs. Vanek preceded her husband in death, March, 1915. Four children survive, they are Mrs. Mary Martley of Mitchell, S.D., Mrs. James Adkisson and Joe Vanek of this city and Charles of Odell, Ore. One brother survives, Mr. Frank of this city. Deceased was a very fine man, quiet and kind to all and a good neighbor and a faithful worker in his lodge, the Z. C. B. J. He was a member of the Catholic church in Bohemia, a membership which he retained. Funeral services will be conducted from the Patterson and Knott Funeral home in this city at 10 o’clock Saturday morning and burial will be in the David City cemetery. Pall bearers will be John Vanous, Frank Houska, Chas. Funeral services for Martin Vanek, respected resident of David City for 43 years, who died Tuesday evening, Aug. 4, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Adkisson, in North David City, were held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning at the Patterson & Knott funeral home, conducted by Rev. R. A. Richmond of St. Luke’s M. E. church. A quartet, Mrs. B. O. Perkins, Miss Ethel Dolison, H. C. Andrews and Charles Hancock, with Miss Margaret Graybill at the piano, sang two hymns, “Near to the Heart of God” and “Shall We Meet.” The pallbearers were Jerry Divisek, Frank Houska, John Kucera, Charles Novacek, Louis Straka and John Vanous. Burial was in the David City cemetery. Among those in attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were Charles Vanek of Odell, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Ed Martley and son and daughter of Mitchell, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Ondracek of Schuyler, Mr. and Mrs. Miller Adkisson of Millerton, Mr. and Mrs. George Leland of Bruno, Frank Vanek of Rising City and a number of friends from Bee, Dwight, Linwood and other places. Mr. Vanek was aged 68 years, 11 months and 9 days at time of his death. He was born in Prague, Bohemia, where he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Kathryn Matejka. They came to America in 1893, residing in David City since that thime. Mrs. Vanek passed away in March, 1913. Mr. Vanek is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Martley of Mitchell, S. Dak., and Mrs. James Adkisson of David City, two sons, Joe Vanek of David City and Charles Vanek of Odell, Ore., and one brother, Frank Vanek of David City. Mr. Vanek was a quiet, kindly man who made many friends during his lifetime. He was a member of the Z.C.B.J. lodge and had retained membership in the Catholic church of Bohemia. ____ Card of Thanks – Our heartfelt thanks are extended for all the help and sympathy given us during the illness and at time of death of our dear father, also for the beautiful floral offerings.
