Henry Kahlandt, Jr., the son of Henry Kahlandt, Sr. and Emily (Carstens) Kahlandt, was born May 10, 1929 in Valley, NE. He graduated from Valley High School in 1947. Following graduation, Henry worked around Waterloo and Valley, Nebraska for area farmers. When he was 25 years old, he was drafted to the United States Army and sent to Germany where he served his country for 2 years. After returning home, he once again worked for area farmers and later traveled to Omaha to work for Roberts Dairy. In 1950, he married Rachel (Chard) Kahlandt. To this union there were no children. During this time Henry worked various jobs such as manager of Allmix Sand and Gravel and later worked for Don Rogurt managing a ranch near North Bend, Nebraska. In 1974, Henry met Joan (Wiles) Sluder. They married on June 29, 1975. Joan had two children, Wes and Wendy, that Henry adopted. He loved and cared for them as if they were his own. Henry and Joan had the common goal of moving to the Sandhills so they packed up and bought a ranch in Burwell, Nebraska. Here, both of their joys were fulfilled; Joan with her love of horses and Henry and his love for hunting. Pheasants, grouse, turkeys, deer, geese and ducks, were plentiful in their new surroundings and none of these were safe when in Henry’s way. He even trapped on the river for muskrats, beaver and mink when the trapping was good. Henry was always taking friends and visitors for a hunt and very few, even those much younger, could keep up with his walking or his shooting; he was an excellent shot. During his time at Burwell, he did ranch work at night, which included raising cattle and putting up hay, and during the day he worked for the local Natural Resource District. He also served as Garfield County Commissioner and owned the local sanitation service for a time. He loved planting trees and all who came to their home could witness this as there were trees planted everywhere. He took much pride in his raspberry bushes and flower gardens as well. In his later years, his best days were spent wandering through his gardens and eagerly showing them off to any guest that would take the time to look. Henry was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. He is survived by his son, James Wesley “Wes” (Vicky) Kahlandt of Clinton, UT and daughter Wendy (Matt) Carraher of Spalding, NE. four grandchildren: Brittany Kahlandt, Alissa Kahlandt, Clayton Carraher and Molly Carraher. two great-grandchildren: Matthew Kahlandt and Dalton Kahlandt and two sisters: Margaret (Melvin) Andrews of Albion, NE; Dorothy Stutzman of Burwell, NE, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joan; grandson Colton Henry Carraher; seven brothers: George Kahlandt, Glen Kahlandt, Clarence Kahlandt, Delmar Kahlandt, Ed Kahlandt, Earl Kahlandt; a sister Florence Ostransky; and infant brother Robert Kahlandt.
