Bio

"Ozelle was born to Walter Floyd Neeley and Mary Elizabeth White Neeley in Jeddo, Texas on December 30, 1922. She had five siblings all of whom preceded her in death: Lloyd Neeley, Troy Penn Neeley, J. F. Neeley, Oteliea (Teeley) Neeley, Nora Neeley Rightmer, and also Ray Rightmer, who was like a brother to her. The family lived in the Delhi and Jeddo area where her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker. She had a wonderful family and carried many good memories of them. Ozelle married Arthur Howard Johnson, also from the Jeddo area, in 1940, when she was seventeen years old. After the war, they settled in McCulloch County where they farmed for many years and raised four children. They were dry land farmers during the historic 1950s Texas drought which lasted between 1949 and 1957. Needless to say, life was very hard. Ozelle was so grateful to get a sewing machine in 1949 so she could sew for her children. She made all the family’s clothes and she also sewed for her mother and her sister Nora. She grew a garden, raised chickens and hogs, helped in the fields, and they both took on extra work to feed their family. Ozelle worked a short time in the school cafeteria and Howard got extra jobs such as highway/road work, and he briefly worked on a tugboat. As hard as life was, they kept their family together and gave their children the best life they could. In 1960, Howard went to work at the Sugar Land Correctional Facility. When he retired, they moved to Rosenberg, Tx, where he passed away in 1979 at the age of 61. Many years later, Ozelle married John Brannaka and they had several happy years together before his death in 2005. Ozelle’s youngest son, John David Johnson passed away in 2014. She is survived by her son Troy Johnson and his wife, Wilma, her daughters Glenda Johnson Goodsir and her husband Bruce, and Mary Johnson Gay and her husband, Sterling. Her surviving family members also include eight grandchildren, Don May, Melissa May-Moncus, Scott Johnson, Donna Johnson, Elizabeth, Emily, Elaine and Ethan Juengerman. Thirteen great grandchildren and Three great-great grandchildren, Nieces- Marilyn Elliott and husband John, Lesta Maijala and husband Sean, Audrey Libya and husband Jim, Nephews Lloyd Rightmer and wife Katie, Jeff Neeley, Floyd Neeley and Billy Neuszer, and Great nephews Dustin Breese and Christopher Breese (deceased). Ozelle was surrounded by many people who loved her, and whom she loved unconditionally. She was a devoted member of the Graeber Road Church of Christ for over forty years and spoke often of her Church as her other family. Her beloved granddaughter Elizabeth took wonderful care of her during the weeks preceding her death, as did her great granddaughters, Kennedy and Kaylyn. She had many wonderful neighbors who watched over her, particularly her next door neighbors, Olga and Ralph, and her neighbor Amalia who brought her meals and checked on her. Her beloved niece Marilyn, called her every day and came to see her frequently, bringing her food and gifts. Because of these dear ones, she was able to live independently in her own home which made her last years much happier. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother, auntie, neighbor and friend, but most of all she was a faithful child of God. Her faith was unshakable and she always, always lived her life according to what she believed was God’s will. She never lost her sense of humor, she loved to laugh, and she never complained. As she said shortly before her death, “ Just remember the good times we had together”. We will. She will be missed. " (McCurdy Funeral Home - Lockhart, Tx - 2020)
