Bio

William F. "Bill" Schwenke, 90, of Coupland died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at Heartwood Nursing Home in Taylor. Family visitation will be 6 to 8 pm, Friday at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Celebration of Life Services will be 2 PM, Sunday, October 5, 2003 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Coupland with Pastor Ernie Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. William Fredrick Schwenke was born on February 2, 1913 to Theodore and Lydia (Pfennig) Schwenke in Pflugerville, Texas. Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and in Central Europe receiving the EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and 3 Overseas Service Bars. On October 25, 1945, he married Lillian Kasper in Taylor, Texas. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Coupland. Bill had been the Postmaster in Coupland for over 30 years before his retirement. He was very active in his church and community and was a member of several clubs and organizations. He was a member of the Taylor Noon Lions Club, past School Board President in Coupland, very active in the Men's Brotherhood of his church, Church Choir, past President of the Church Council, Coupland Volunteer Fire Department, V.F.W, and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frieda Schwenke, Lydia Windmeyer; three brothers, Paul, Phillip, and Raymond Schwenke. He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian M. Schwenke of Coupland; his daughter, Anna Marie Wolbrueck and husband David of Round Rock; one sister, Ruby Drozd and husband Raymond of Austin; one granddaughter, Kristel Wolbrueck; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Kenneth Schwenke, Billy Weaver, Beaver Welch, Tommy Schwenke, Anthony Kasper. Honorary Pallbearers are Edgar Thiele, Calvin Ging, William Pfluger, Bill Leach, Leroy Poldrack, Edward Haverland, Leon Kendrick and Ervin Goetz. Memorials may be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 146, Coupland, TX. 78615 or to Johns Community Hospital Auxiliary.
