Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Friday, 20 June 1924, page 5 Mortuary - Mrs. Chas. E. Harshfield Stricken with a sudden attack of apoplexy while returning to her home near Doniphan, Mrs. Emily Tabitha Harshfield, 65, wife of Charles E. Harshfield, farmer residing southwest of Doniphan, Nebr., died Thursday evening before medical aid could be summoned. Mrs. Harshfield, who had been visiting in the city at the home of her son, William, 922 West Ninth street, had left the Harshfield home shortly before 11 P.M. in an auto in company with other members of the family to make the return trip home. She was apparently in good spirits and feeling as well as usual. While nearing the corner of Fifth and Eddy streets, she was stricken with a sudden illness. Members of the family accompanying her called to her but she was unable to answer. A physician and ambulance were immediately summoned but she had passed away before either arrived. Apoplexy was given as the cause of death. Funeral services will be held from the farm home near Doniphan at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, with burial in the Doniphan cemetery. ============ Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent; Monday, 30 June 1924, page 9 "County in Brief - Doniphan" The community was shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Charles Harshfield, which occurred on Thursday evening as she was returning from Grand island where she had been with her son and daughter to visit her son Claude and family. Emily McKnight was born in Meggs [sic] county, Ohio, October 11, 1858. On October 22, 1881 she was united in marriage with Willis Jewell, one son, Lester W. Jewell, being born. Three days after his birth, the father passed away. On October 7, 1888, she became the wife of Charles E. Harshfield. To this union were born six children, Mrs. mary M. Beekman of Grand Island, Charles V. and Eddie Harshfield of Arapahoe, Nebr., Claude W. Harshfield of Grand Island, and Ross and Alice who live at home. These with the husband and one step daughter, Mrs. John Rainforth, of Litchfield, Nebr., two sisters, Mrs. John Fisher of Wichita, Kans., Mrs. Alice Mosier of Carmen, Okla., two brothers, James McKinkler [sic] of Buffville, Kans., and Will McKnight of Larned, Kans., survive her. . . Funeral services were conducted from the home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, by Rev. Charles Luscher, and interment was made in Cedar View cemetery.
