Bio

Mary Lee (Hyzak) Gorubec, 74, of Granger went peacefully to her eternal home on Friday, August 18, 2006, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family at Christopher House in Austin. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm, Sunday August 20, 2006 at S.S. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger. Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, August 21,2006 at SS C&M Catholic Church in Granger. Burial to follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Granger. Mary Lee was the eldest of eight children born on June 18, 1932 to Albert and Regina (Dykowski) Hyzak in Granger, Texas. She attended SS C&M Catholic School thru the 8th grade. She then attended Our Lady of the Lake Convent in San Antonio from 1946 to 1952. In 1952, she began working for her father at Granger Hardware & Tin Shop. Mary Lee went on to manage the store and helped her Dad until the store's closing in August 1989. During this time she met and then married Jerry B. Gorubec on May 1, 1955 at SS C&M Catholic Church in Granger. This marriage was blessed with the birth of their twins, Monica and Michael in March of 1956. In 1965, after 10 years of marriage her husband, Jerry entered his eternal life. With the help of her parents, Mary Lee raised her twins while continuing to work at her Dad's store. She began working at the University of Texas J.J. Pickle Research Campus in 1990 as a Clerk II and retired in 2000 after 10 years of service. Mary Lee was a faithful member of SS C&M Catholic Church. She was also a member of the SS C&M Senior Choir for 50 years and choir director since 1965, singing Czech hymns at Church services, funerals, wedding and anniversaries. She coordinated additional music programs as well. Mary Lee served in other ministries which included religious education teacher and Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the St. Helen's K.J.Z.T. #18, K.J.T.#28, Granger Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Member & Team Captain of the Granger Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Pumper Team and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 282, where she held offices as President, Secretary and Treasurer. Mary Lee was dedicated to her church and the catholic school. She volunteered many years for the parish picnic auction's and other social events. Her deep faith nurtured her devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and our Blessed Mother. She always felt it was a privilege to help families and people in times of need, especially helping those with choir services for funeral arrangements and singing at the special occasions. In June, she was so honored to be the SS C&M recipient of the 2006 Lumen Gentium award "The Light of the World". This award is in recognition of her service and faithfulness to the church. Mary Lee was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her children and grandsons were such an important part of her life and those precious times spent together were priceless. She so loved watching her grandsons activities whether it was football, powerlifting, baseball, or basketball "Granny was there." Board games, tarock games, dominoes, and any get together were always special and enjoyed by her and her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brother, Albert Hyzak, Jr. Her survivors include her children, Michael Gorubec of Granger, Monica Stefek and husband James of Taylor; grandsons, Jeffrey Stefek of Waco and Jordan Stefek of Taylor; Six sisters, Sister Thadine Hyzak of La Grange, Marjorie Meier of Taylor, Barbara Kolinek and husband W.C. of Pflugerville, Sister Barbara Lynn Hyzak of San Antonio, Paula Hajda and husband Tim of Taylor, and Rita George of Round Rock; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hyzak of Taylor; sister-in-law Margaret Wolf and husband Cyril of Taylor; brother-in-law Joe Gorubec and wife Edna of Austin; brother-in-law Frank J. Stefek and wife Wilma of Many LA.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers are her niece, Cheryl Brown, nephews, Glenn R Hyzak, Charles Kolinek, Bryan Hajda, Eric Lally and cousin, Gilbert L. Bohac. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons, Jeffrey Stefek and Jordan Stefek.
