Tomes, 53, of Statesville, N.C., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at home. Born Jan. 20, 1949, in Lincoln, Neb., he was the son of Dottie M. Bielaszka of Mechanicsburg and the late Gilbert B. Tomes of San Bernadino, Calif. He was a 1967 graduate of Trinity High School in Camp Hill and a 1974 graduate of Temple University's Tyler School of Art. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers. During his tour of duty, he taught English to Vietnamese children. At the time of his death, he was employed as a master goldsmith/silversmith by R. Gregroy Jewelers in Statesville, N.C. He enjoyed art, fishing, camping and the outdoors. Surviving are his wife Jan L. Tomes, of Statesville, N.C; his mother and stepfather Dottie and Anthony Bielaszka of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Patricia Vogelsong of Mechanicsburg and Mary Gray of Cary, N.C; a stepson, Scott Redman of Spring Hill, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Julie Redman, at home; a grandson, Daniel Arthur Redman at home; five other grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no funeral or viewing, but a memorial celebration of life will be held for family and friends in the mountains of North Carolina in the spring when the trout are biting.
