John's obituary, which was published in The Tacoma News; the date of publication is not known. John Henry Baltuff, who made and lost several fortunes in the gold strikes of the northland about the turn of the century, died Wednesday in a nursing home in Auburn after an illness of several years. Mr. Baltuff's death, at 81 years of age, ended a colorful career which took him into the Yukon territory and Alaska after gold but kept him there in the hotel and other lines of business for many years. In the Dawson district, a mountain, Baultoff, using the Russian spelling, was named after him. Born in Iowa, Mr. Baltuff came west when a young man. A mining engineer, he was in one of the first groups leaving Seattle for the gold rush in 1898. His first strike on Hunker creek, the family recalls, rewarded him with $50,000. In 1910 Mr. Baltuff returned to Tacoma to marry and then went back to McCarthy, Alaska, during the Shushanna gold rush. In McCarthy he built, owned and operated a warehouse and a hotel, the town's first and only two-story structure. He also built and operated the power plant for the principal mine. In 1918 the Baltuffs returned to Puget Sound and settled at Purdy on the peninsula. Another move in 1925 took Mr. Baltuff to Montana to engage in placer and copper mining. Later he operated the Hiline hotel in Ellensburg. A stroke in 1938 left Mr. Baltuff partially paralyzed and since 1946 he had been ill in Seattle. Mr. Baltuff, who was a charter member of the Eagles lodge in Alaska, is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Whitworth of Peru, Ind., Mrs. Sarah Johnston of Seattle, and Mrs. Florence Wood of Tacoma; two brothers, Fred of Purdy and Harvey of Vaughn; a sister, Mrs. Fred Forest of Vaughn and six grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Price funeral home in Auburn. Burial will be in the Auburn cemetery. He married Eduarda Griswold Keith on May 10, 1910 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. They would later divorce between 1922-1925 and Eduarda resumed her maiden name.
