Bio

Luella Marie (Garris) Gibson passed away July 22,2020 at the age of 98. Luella was born December2, 1921 to Ethel Agnes (Kissel) and George Merritt Garris in a sod house in Sargent Nebraska. The youngest of 3 children was born with scarlet fever. Luella attended Blue Mound Country School and Sargent Public School during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. After graduation, she was the stenographer at the high school and a clerk at JC Penney. In 1943, she married military service member, Lyle Gibson, and worked assembling bombs at the defense plant in Grand Island til the end of World War II. The couple returned to Sargent to reside, where Luella and Merlene Grint co-owned the renowned Fashion Nook for 25 years. After the passing of Lyle in 1986, Luella relocated to Houston Texas. She enjoyed spoiling her adoring granddaughters, a business adventure with her daughter-in-law Ruth, and becoming a professional baby-rocker at a local daycare center. After moving with the family to Topeka, she decided to move to North Platte, Nebraska where she spent the last 12 years. Luella got her first passport at the age of 88 and traveled to Central America to visit. She was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, the Sargent Women’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her son, Loyle, granddaughters Amanda and Katie, great-grandchildren Bine, Angus, and Oren, daughter-in-law Ruth Gibson-Bowman, many nieces and nephews, and an impressive fan club.
