Bio

Mr. McCullough was born in County Tyrone, Ireland. He died in Sherman, Texas. He and two of his brothers left Ireland from Londonderry together for the United States landing in Buffalo, New York. They then made their way to Mount Sterling, Kentucky, where some of their relatives and other Irish people had settled. Hugh became a naturalized United States citizen on 18 February 1874 in Montgomery County, Kentucky. Hugh and his brother James McCullough migrated to Texas and settled on a farm northwest of Sherman in 1876. After his brother died Hugh continued to farm where he lived alone. In 1877 Patrick and Mary Dooley Murphy and their large family moved from Iowa to Sherman. Hugh and the Murphy's were Catholics and attended services at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman. He soon became interested in one of the Murphy's daughters and he began courting Margaret and on 19 April 1895 they were married in the old St. Mary's Catholic church. Their marriage was blessed with eight sons and one daughter. The youngest, Edward was ordained a Catholic priest in 1927 and returned as pastor of St Mary's Catholic Church between 1940 and 1954. Hugh died on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Margaret his widow died in 1957. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Above is paraphrased, with permission, to keep it at a reasonable length, from entries found on the book The History of Grayson County, Texas - Grayson County Frontier Village, published in 1979.
