Daniel "Mickey" Mikulencak was born on September 12, 1919, in the Polanka Community southwest of Taylor to Frank and Mary (Pokorny) Mikulencak. He had eight brothers and sisters. He attended Polanka and Tyler schools. As a child, he enjoyed having picnics, fishing, hunting, and gathering pecans along Brushy Creek where he learned how to swim. He was baptized on October 26, 1919, and confirmed on August 28, 1932, at Taylor Brethren Church. He grew up working on the farm, cotton gins, and machine shops during the depression before being drafted into the army. Daniel was drafted into the Army on October 17, 1941. He took his basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was in the 3rd Infantry Division and participated in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. From there he went through Central Europe to Germany. For three years, he slept outside in the open. He stayed until 1946 as a guard in the Nuremberg Prision in Germany. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Award, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, Battle Star for Moroccan Campaign, Battle Star for Tunisian Campaign, Battle Star for Sicilian Campaign, Battle Star for Naples Foggia Campaign, Battle Star for Rome-Arno Campaign, Battle Star for Southern France Campaign, Battle Star for Rhineland Campaign, Battle Star for Central European Campaign, and 3rd Infantry Division. Awarded Croix-de-Guerre with Palm, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and Distinguished Unit Badge. At the end of the war, in Germany, he helped capture Hitler s home. At the end of his service, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. After the war, he came back and started farming near Coupland. He married Lenora Speigelhauer on November 25, 1948, at St. Paul s Lutheran Church in Taylor, Texas, and they moved to Norman's Crossing. They later moved to the Hare/Hoxie Community and in 1955, they bought a farm at Noack and he started working at the Industrial Generating Plant at Rockdale as a certified welder. He retired from IGC after working 29 years. Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, ranching, farming, welding, fishing, and building things. He was an outstanding listener and problem-solver. He believed in working hard and accomplishing the job at hand. He was not the type to back down when the going got tough; he could be hard as a rock but yet at the same time he had a really kind side. Daniel thought of everyone else first, he was a very patient teacher and would make you learn how to think for yourself. He would test you to see if you learned the lesson.
