OBITUARY: Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Monday, 3 January 1977: Dawson Morehead Dawson Morehead, a retired locomotive engineer for Missouri Pacific Railroad, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Elkhart Nursing Home following a long illness. He was 81. Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart with the Rev. Alton Jones and Dr. Gary Fitzgerald officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories at Elkhart under the direction of Hassell & Foster. Active pallbearers were Joe Bailey Parker, Grover McDonald, Harold Woodard, Clyde Woodard, Jack Spencer, W. A. Montgomery and Grady Isbell. In addition to all friends of the family, designated honorary pallbearers were W. J. Beaudoin, C. B. Adams, Turner Jones and Wallace Golsan. Mr. Morehead was born Jan. 1, 1896, in Porter Springs, Houston County, a son of the late W. D. Morehead and Fannie Ann Agent Morehead. He had resided in Houston and Anderson counties all fo his life and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart. He was in the military during World War I and saw overseas service. He was affiliated with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen. A son, James Dawson Morehead Jr., preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 1970. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. May Bell Woodard Morehead of Elkhart; a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Mary Ann) Denson of Nederland; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jimmy (Nelda) Morehead of Austin; a brother, A. B. Morehead of Elkhart; a sister, Mrs. Marshall (‘Allie) Lively of Palestine; five grandchildren, Miss Michelle Denson and Miss Mary Denson, both of Nederland; Miss Karen Morehead of Austin, James Morehead III of Austin, and Alan Denson of Nederland, and several nieces and nephews.
