Bio

Hollis Lee “Sonny” Benton, Jr., of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away June 14, 2020 at the age of 75. He was born January 2, 1945 in Wilson, Oklahoma. Sonny was a member of Franklin Baptist Church in Norman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and anything to do with being outdoors. Sonny adored his grandkids and enjoyed passing on the tradition of teaching them to hunt and fish and love it as he did. Sonny was a fork-lift operator for Dayton/Firestone Tires for over 30 years. He was an extremely hard worker and as soon as he got off work, he would change his clothes and go outside and work some more. Sonny’s favorite word was “dadgum” - he was stubborn and opinionated, but knowledgeable. He was known for saying “I don’t mean to get in your business – but I’m gonna get in your business!!” Sonny was multi-talented and there wasn’t anything Sonny couldn’t fix. He didn’t stop until he figured it out. Sonny would get the family together for his famous fish fry’s, and for Christmas, Thanksgiving and birthdays. Sonny is survived by 2 sons, Edward “Eddie” Benton, of Norman and Christopher “Chris” Benton & wife, Leigh, of Noble; 1 daughter, Holly Martin, of McLoud; 7 grandchildren, Ashley, Timothy, Logan, Jordan, Marissa, Nick & Luke; 7 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Claudia, Carol, Juanita, and Virginia; and 1 brother, Thurman “Skip” Elmore, Jr.; and a host of other loving family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his step-father, Thurman Elmore, Sr; sister, Linda Vance; aunt, Vivle Terry; and his beloved wife, Glenda Benton. Visitation will be held from 9am-9pm, Friday, June 19, 2020 at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel, located at 120 South Broadway, in Moore, Oklahoma. Funeral Services for Sonny will be held Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel. Interment to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, in Oklahoma City. Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel.
