ARNOLD - Douglas Dean Cole, 78, died Aug. 8, 2005, at his home in Arnold, after complications from a stroke. He was born June 6, 1927, at the farm home of his parents, Roy and Gunhild Larson Cole, the first of five children born to this union. Weighing only 3 pounds, 8 ounces at birth, Doug's incubator was a shoebox in the oven. He attended grade school at Elim Valley country school and attended Arnold High School, graduating in 1945. On May 19, 1950, he married Betty Bean at Arnold. Four children were born to this union, Mark, Karen, Karla and Janet. He farmed with his father in Elim Valley until 1955, when the couple moved to North Platte where he worked at State Farm and Fairmont Foods. They moved back to Arnold in 1956, and he worked for Central Implement Company for a time. He then spent the next 20 years serving as manager of Arnold Feed and Seed Store until the business sold to Bellamy Grain. He continued employment there and later worked at Brengelman Insurance Agency. He kept books for the Arnold Township for many years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing softball and pool, and hunting pheasants with his friends. He rarely missed a weekend movie at the Arnold Theatre. In his retirement years he took up gardening and enjoyed daily walks downtown to the local Mighty Mart to visit with friends. He also loved to weave tales about his childhood experiences. He had a beautiful singing voice. He loved singing in the choir at the Tallin Church in his youth, and he and his siblings sang on the radio in the 1930s. He attended the Baptist Church in Arnold. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Betty; his daughters and sons-in-law, whom he loved as his own, Karen (Bob) Hough, Karla (John) Rockwell, and Janet (Gary) Larreau, all of Arnold; grandchildren, Michael Hough of Eden Prairie, Minn., Chris Hough of McCook, Lacy (Rob) McCarthy of Couer d'Alene, Idaho, Brandy (Justin) Mason of Callaway, and Dayna Larreau of Arnold; two sisters, Carolyn Geiser of Loveland, Colo., and Pat (Bill) Smith of Murrieta, Calif.; and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; a son, Mark; three infant grandchildren; a brother, Milan; and a sister, Keo. The family suggests memorials to the Rialto Theater, Baptist Church or the Tallin Church Building Fund. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Arnold with the Rev. Irving Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Tallin Cemetery south of Arnold. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Arnold Funeral Home.
