Bio

Jacob was born around 1800. He was traveling with his family, from Germany (in what was Prussia), when he died in transit from New York to Galveston, along with his wife Julianne Katherina Bottler (b. Jan 25, 1798). Their son Frederick and at least one other child died as well, possibly following a yellow fever epidemic. They may have been buried at sea, making orphans of their remaining children. In 1838, Harris County held an auction to settle Jacob's estate. His orphaned children were originally sent to the orphanage in Lynchburg, Texas before being taken in and raised by various local families, such as the Brooks, Penn and Singleton families in the Crosby-Huffman area. They had the following known children: Christian Carl Karcher (1815-1816), died in Prussia Augusta Louisa Karcher (1819-1838), died in transit Ludwick Friedrich Karcher (1819-1838), died in transit Wilhelmina Henrietta Karcher (1821-1824), died in Prussia Karolina Phil Karcher (1824-1825), died in Prussia Henrietta Maria Karcher Bottler (1826-1909) Adolphus Karcher (1828-1855) Christian Francis Karcher (1830-1874) Sophia Carol Karcher (1832-1833), died in Prussia Phillip Rudolph Karcher (1833-1883) Charles Peter Karcher (1836-1881) Anna Maria Karcher (?-1838), died in transit
