The son of Barnabas Butcher and Mary Magdalene Moser, Solomon married Katherine Stephens on 12 Dec 1815 in Johnson County, Tennessee. The first of their 12 children was born the following year while Solomon earned a living doing farm work and as a carpenter. The Butchers decided to move to Indiana about the same time as Katherine's father, Lewis Stephens. After three years of marriage, they packed all their possessions in their wagon and set off on rough, dirt roads, bringing with them one son, Hiram, born in September 1816 and a baby daughter, Polly, born in August 1818. Hiram was only two years old when the family made their move to Indiana. When the Butchers arrived, they found few white people living in Monroe County. In fact, it was later said that Hiram became the "pet of Indian friends and the playfellow of Indian children." Solomon established the family home in the same place as his father-in-law, Lewis, and eventually purchased 160 acres of land. Three sons were born between 1820 and 1825. 7 more children were added to the family between 1827 and 1839. As the Butcher children were growing up, they had to help run the family farm and did not have much time for formal education. Typical of his brothers and sisters, oldest son Hiram received a total of only six months schooling during his entire childhood. He later reported that he educated himself "by the light of the fire" in an attempt to compensate for his early disadvantages. Solomon and Katherine lived in Indiana for more than a half century. In 1869, Solomon passed away 8 days before his 72nd birthday. The loss came just 5 months after the sudden death of one of the Butchers' sons, Adam. After that, Katherine moved in with one of the couple's other boys, Lewis Butcher, until her death. Like her husband, she was buried in Monroe County's Clear Creek Cemetery. Katherine most likely died in the 1870's before Lewis and his family moved to Kansas. Children: 7 sons, 5 daughters.
