Bio

John consistently claimed that he was born in Maryland, but it is unclear whether his father had moved to Allegany County (now Garrett County) by this point. The Family Bible states that he was 60 in 1855, putting his birth year around 1794. This is the year that I've used, but the month and day are calculated from the death index ("94 years 11 months 26 days"). According to his wife and witnesses in her widow's pension application, John died and was buried 10 November 1886. His death index claims he was just under 95 years old which would indicate a birth year of about 1792 (it also claims he died on 9 November which may indicate he had died overnight). However, the 1820 census indicates he was not yet over 25 years old at the time; the 1850 and 1860 census records indicate that he was born about 1795; 1870 census suggests a birth around 1794; and 1880 census suggests around 1793. All things considered, he was probably born in 1794, in agreement with the family Bible. John married Christena Markley 9 Mar 1815 in Fayette County, PA. In 1820, he was enumerated on the census already having a wife and one or two children (both probably died before 1830). He and Christena had at least five children. He secondly married Jane Campbell on 19 Jan 1868
